Selecting An Ice Auger

Ice Auger

Things To Consider Before Selecting An Ice Auger

For ice fishing buffs, an ice auger is a must have necessity. No ice fishing angler wants to go through the hassle of boring a hole through the ice manually, you also must think about the safety issues when cutting a hole by hand. Nowadays, you can get power ice augers that are lightweight and compact that can save you from hours of hard work. Ice fishing augers will make your ice fishing experience so much more enjoyable.

There are several different types of ice augers on the market. Depending on the amount of ice fishing you will be doing, you need to think about what ice auger will best meet your needs. You need to look at how much power you will need, the size of the ice auger, and the types of drill bits you will need.

Here are a few things you need to consider before selecting an ice auger:

Electric or Gas – The majority of ice fishermen choose a gas powered auger due to not having to worry about a power source. Gas powered ice augers can go anywhere and you will never have to worry about long power cords or battery life. Electric ice augers on the other hand are usually lighter and less expensive than gas augers. They are a lot quieter and more eco-friendly. Also keep in mind that most electric ice augers are less powerful than the traditional gas auger and if you are planning to get a lot of use out of your auger, gas powered would be your best choice.

Variable Speed Control – Make sure you choose an ice auger that is equipped with a variable speed control. This will allow you to control the speed of the bit and make drilling your ice hole a lot more safer. You will not have to worry about the auger kicking back as much as you would with a single speed. The speed control will also allow you to drill your fishing holes much quicker as well.

Drill Bit Size – Drill bits for ice augers are usually no more and ten inches in diameter, standard bit are between six and eight inches. If you are needing to drill larger diameter holes then you would definitely want to go with a gas powered auger. But, if you only need to drill small holes then a electric powered auger should work just fine.

An Ice Auger Will Make It A Lot Easier

Powered ice augers are definitely the convenient way to drill holes for ice fishing, as you can be done in minutes rather than hours. But, if you are feeling manly…You can pick up a manual cutter or pick and have at it while getting a good workout in the freezing weather. Or have more time and fun by using a power ice auger!

Having Fun On Ice: A Guide To Ice Fishing Equipment

Several countries,in the frozen north, practice a style of angling that is quite a bit different than any other form of recreational fishing. Ice fishing is a slow, sometimes dangerous sport that requires the angler to have patience and the right equipment

Ice fishing started in frozen countries such as Canada and Norway, but is not limited to these locations. In fact some lakes in Alaska freeze thick enough to fish on. Like the name states, this form of angling can only occur on frozen lakes thick enough to sustain a lot of weight.

Traditionally, ice fishing equipment amounts to nothing more than a sturdy wooden pole, a long, strong piece of fishing line, hooked and baited, and a stool to sit upon for several hours. Also, some prefer to hunt with a sharpened wooden spear. Although his method is not as widely used or appreciated, the spear is another possible piece of ice fishing equipment.

But, there is more to ice fishing than sitting and waiting. The fisherman also needs to be able to cut a sufficient hole through the frozen lake to get to the water underneath. That’s where ice spades or ice saws, two specialized articles of ice fishing equipment, comes in. The fisherman uses these tools to cut a hole about five inches in diameter out of the frozen lake. A strainer is another piece of ice fishing equipment used to sift out newly forming chunks of ice within the hole.

There are a few different kinds of angling techniques that can be applied to ice fishing. The first uses small, fast lures and a keen eye, to catch smaller game. The second method requires a special piece of ice fishing equipment known as a ‘tie-up’. Using this method, the angler drags the multi hooked fishing line by hand until it strikes, thus, “tying” the fish in a web of hooks. The last method is the spear method, in which the fisherman places decoy fish at the top of the water in the cut hole, then waits until the perfect moment to strike.

As I stated above, ice fishing can be a dangerous sport. Water must be frozen to about four inches thick in order to support the average humans’ weight. Some times the ice is a bit thinner than four inches. Mistakes like misjudging the strength of the ice can be a potentially life threatening error. If one were to fall into a partially frozen lake, he or she would most likely die from hypothermia, if not properly taken care of.

So in conclusion, if you have sufficient knowledge and the right ice fishing equipment, ice angling can be a fun and fulfilling sport that people of all ages can enjoy.

Buying A Fishing Rod For The Optimal Fishing Experience

A fishing rod is one of the most important tools used to catch fish. Catching fish is deemed as relaxing, invigorating and good eating by many. Many fishermen are very competitive and are looking to catch a particular type of fish. Having the right tool can make your fishing trip much more successful. The size of the fishing rod can greatly depend on the size of fish that you want to catch. Before purchasing a fishing rod you will want to determine the type of fishing that you will be doing. The size of the fish, method of fishing and water conditions all make a huge difference. Knowing ahead of time the type of fish that will be biting can assist you in the decision of purchasing a fishing rod.

Using a fly fishing rod is best suited for catching trout or salmon. In order to catch them you will need a flexible fishing rod. Having the correct fishing rod, line, nets and other tools can ensure that you bring in the fish that you desire. Remember that with salmon fishing you will be holding the rod so make sure that you have a comfortable grip. Many salmon rods are a bit more expensive, but well worth the price when you bring in that prized salmon.

.

If winter fishing is your desire there are ice fishing rods that can be used in frozen lake conditions. These rods allow you to fish from holes in the frozen water. The ice fishing rod is generally of good quality and a bit more durable than other types of rods. The length of the ice rod can vary between 24 and 36 inches in length. You may need to experiment a bit to determine the best fit for you. Everyone is different so it is impossible to say that one-rod or the other is right for everyone.

When you want to do coarse fishing, a carbon fiber rod is the method normally used to catch any member of cyprinid family. That is why it’s good for you to know what type of fish that will be biting before hitting the water. Other types of rods are spin casting rods, spinning rod, ultra light rods, and surf rods. These are fishing rods designed for specific types of fishing and much of the decision depends on what you are most comfortable with. Another determining factor is what kind of fish that you are looking to catch. Before purchasing a fishing rod make sure to ask yourself the following questions. What type of rod should I use? What type of fish will I be fishing for? How much do I want to spend? These are also questions that you can discuss with a fishing pro or sales person before making your final decision.

Ice Fishing Lures – Tips To Use Summer Tackle In Winter

Though mostly ice fishing need a different kind of gear and is a sport of its own, there are many ways that those who fish in summers can use the same gear for the extreme winter months too.

The essential tackle for ice fishing
The main pieces in the box of tackle for ice fishing are the Jigs which come in various sizes and shapes. An experienced ice fishing buff will have many varying styles, colors and sizes, f jigs in their equipment box, and in addition will make sure that the hooks which are fixed to the jigs are very sharp , especially because of the nibbling habits of the winter feeding fish.

Lures for winter fishing
The lures used in jigs for winter ice fishing are normally in brighter colors as they are fished at a much deeper part the in winter months unlike in the warmer months of summer. The jigs have ice fishing lures which are usually chartreuse, yellow, white, bright purple, pink, green, or orange. Many times the colors which are on the jigs could be white with accent colors or also with accent colors on black. Some of the ice fishing lures or jigs may have vibrantly colored tails added on to make their drop in the water more gradual and give them additional jigging movement once they have reached the depth that the angler wants.

Jigs and lures that are used for ice fishing are patterned with a body that is molded and contains the eye and the hook. A swivel or leader or is occasionally fixed on to the line and occasionally something heavy can be used up from the jig to let the bounce back or jig all along the bottom. For fishing lures that are intended for deep ice water fishing the lures are hanging in the water by means of bobbers or downriggers as deepness seekers and then one end of the rod is drawn up and down to move the ice fishing lures.

Experiment with a variety of colors
The main angle to fishing with the different lures for ice fishing is to try out a variety of colors and sizes of jigs and also the jigging movement or action. Different fish get attracted to different tempos of actions and colors to encourage them to bite. Jigs for ice fishing are usually baited with live worms or plastic ones or minnows or baits. Live bait is forbidden and against the rules in certain areas, but plastic bait work just as effectively. You could end up loosing some of your lures if there are debris or weeds in the area, so it is always wiser to carry spare ones with you..

As lures used for ice fishing are not too expensive it is not going to cost you much to have a variety of colors and sizes and some specialty ice fishing lures in the equipment box.
